Designing interdisciplinary research that opens up the future of analytical science by fusing optical science / technology and mass spectrometry
Osaka University has the only university-based mass spectrometry equipment development base in FRC. In the 21st century, the forefront of optical science has made great strides, but has not yet realized the potential of mass spectrometry. In this project, we will develop the forefront of analytical science by crossing and fusing both fields. Interdisciplinary and fusion of fields is a difficult task now since the specialization of research in each field has advanced to a high degree. In addition to accumulating dialogues between research groups, we will take on the challenge of creating a place for the creation of new research platforms through various attempts such as discovering and encouraging the small research and development based on free ideas that are not bound by the frame.
FEATURE
involved in “light x mass spectrometry” through dialogue activities. We will adopt a membership system.
We will establish a research design network base for “optical x mass spectrometry” inside and outside the university to promote exchanges between members.
We aim to compose a challenging sprouting research group for “light x mass spectrometry” research design.
We encourage the development of experimental equipment based on the basic principles and promote the development of research human resources through public engagement.

Nursery for interdisciplinary research, a place for free development and activity of students, graduate students, and researchers
Osaka University Venture Business Laboratory (VBL), which was established in 1995 and had survived for 20 years on the basis of the graduate schools of science, science engineering was a cross-disciplinary organization with optical science research at its core. At its peak, it was a nursery for interdisciplinary research and a place for students, graduate students, researchers, and faculty members to grow freely. From sprouting research to social implementation, while focusing on cutting-edge research in individual laboratories, we encouraged them to proceed with research outside the framework, and there was a fireless environment where they could understand and collaborate on each other’s research. We have nurtured research that will sprout startups and have inspired people with entrepreneurship. The core of this project is the former members who have built and developed this VBL. Based on that personal network, we will further incorporate off-campus members such as corporate members to form the foundation of a human network.
Further development
Ferom Human network and cradle formation to subproject creation
The following actions are planned with the aim of creating a model for the cross-sectional research platform. (1) Introduce a membership system and form a network. Utilizing the science caravan, we will expand the members in an event-driven manner. (2) Secure a room as a base (cradle) for exchanges and research design activities that ensure psychological safety. (3) Set up a core research project: At PRC, fusion research of super-resolution fluorescence imaging and mass imaging has already been started to develope. Furthermore, we will consider the introduction of advanced research such as phase-controlled coherent Raman spectroscopic imaging into the field of mass spectrometry. (4) Develop a system using a spectroscopic system such as a femtosecond laser transferred from VBL and a self-made mass spectrometer, and launch sprouting research subprojects. Involve undergraduate students in these sub-projects. (5) By participating in public engagement such as Science Festa, we aim to bring about a positive cycle in which researchers grow and play an active role, and their appearance attracts the next generation.
